Closed Churchyards

When burials can no longer take place in churchyards because they have become full, then those churchyards can be declared “closed” and the maintenance of them passes to the local Town or Parish Council. In St Neots the Town Council has, through this mechanism, become responsible for the maintenance of the closed churchyards of St Mary’s Parish Church, St Neots, St Mary’s Parish Church, Eynesbury and St Mary’s Parish Church, Eaton Socon. Burial records for church yards are kept by the individual churches.

Whilst the Town Council is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of those closed churchyards, the responsibility for trees within those churchyards remains with the incumbent or the Parochial Church Council.
